2013 marks the 35th anniversary of the first appearance of dragon boats on the Charles River, making it the first and oldest dragon boat festival in North America. Last year, over 40 teams from Greater Boston, New England, other parts of the US and Canada competed over a 500-meter course in an energetic race to the finish line. The teams practice in the spring to prepare for the June races, paddling in sleek, colorful 39-foot-Hong Kong-style dragon boats. Teams come from schools, museums, banks, and community agencies. Additionally, each year several cancer survivor teams compete. The festival in the past has included a full afternoon of performances featuring artists of Asian and Asian-American heritage, such as taiko troupes, Chinese instrumental ensemble, folk dances from different Asian cultures, and Asian martial art, drawing more than 20,000 participants and spectators annually.
The Boston Dragon Boat Festival is run by volunteers. We raise funds annually to conduct a colorful, fun, and safe event. Contributions are tax deductible. Thank you for your consideration in making the 2013 Boston Dragon Boat Festival a success.
